Hourglass Ripsmatta

$650.00

This piece is woven using a technique called ripsmatta aka rep weave. Both of these terms reference the "ribs" that is the most notable feature in this type of weaving. The warp is extremely dense so that when the weft fiber is thrown through the warp, all that is seen is the physical shape of the weft. The main design within this piece are the hourglass shapes throughout. To create this, I separated the two colored warps from each other and gathered them with white thread. Not only does it create the repeated shape, but also a diamond in the negative space. Since the warp is so dense, the hourglass colors fade in and out of each other. This repeated pattern plays with viewers' eyes going back and forth between which shape is the dominant form of the composition.
