Intro to Natural Dye Workshop

65.00

Come join Charleston artist, Kristy Bishop, and explore the exciting world of natural dyes.  All around us, there are plants that may seem ordinary, but with some knowledge and skill they can yield the richest and most beautiful colors.  Whether its onion skins or annatto seeds from the local grocer, goldenrod picked from a roadside, or a more exotic dye such as indigo and cochineal that have been cultivated and traded worldwide, students will learn how to extract color that is lightfast, permanent, and brilliant. During this workshop, attendees will be able to experiment on multiple types of fiber before dyeing a final silk scarf and any additional fabric/fiber that they have brought.  Types of fabric that are suggested for dyeing are cotton, silk, linen, wool yarn, or any natural fiber.

The workshop will be held at the Vat Shack, a mobile indigo dye studio built by Enough Pie and Clemson Design Build. It is located in the yard behind Joseph Floyd Manor.  Indigo is one of the most important dyes utilized when creating a spectrum of color.  Not only are a range of blues achieved, but it is a key component when making greens, teals, and purples.  Students will have full advantage of the 30 gallon indigo vats along with cochineal (fuchsias and reds), annatto seeds (bright orange), goldenrod (yellows and greens), walnut (tan to dark brown), madder root (oranges and reds), and weld (bright yellows).

Come and enjoy the timeless and historic process of dyeing!
